SUSTAINABLE FISHERIES MANAGEMENT IN SOLOMON ISLANDS

WWF-Australia are pleased to partner with Simplot Australia through their John West brand and the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP) to work with people like Sese who are pioneering innovative, community-led approaches to sustainable fisheries management in Solomon Islands

Local fishers are the heart and soul of the Solomon Islands, with fishing playing an role in local culture, diets and the economy. However, Solomon Islands’ coastal fisheries are under increasing pressure from climate change, unsustainable fishing and habitat loss

That’s why WWF is supporting innovative, community-led approaches to sustainable fisheries management. This includes working with local fishermen like Sese who assists in collecting important data

“We use a measuring board to see the size of fish. After we measure and identify species we can tell whether it is mature or immature," says Sese. "After we use a data sheet to collect data. We sent this to the [WWF] office and they try to identify which fish are plentiful and which are not.”

With this data, Sese and his community are better equipped to make informed decisions and sustainable management plans.

"When we protect our fish we're happy. Other communities see what we're doing and learn from us. We're really happy because our reef is well protected," says Sese.

WWF-Australia is grateful for the support of the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP) and John West Australia.
